It’s a common problem
You shouldn’t be embarrassed about a problem that the vast majority of people will experience at some point in their life. Despite what you may have heard, toenail fungus (onychomycosis) is not a problem that you have to live with.
Hope Not Hype
Toenail fungus is a very stubborn issue. Our patients often share with us
that they’ve been told by other healthcare professionals, from dermatologists to
podiatrists, that there is nothing that can be done to cure toenail fungus. No
doctor wants to offer their patients a treatment that is going to be ineffective,
because that would result in many unhappy patients. If you’ve been told you
have to “live with it” by other doctors, allow the Bay Area Fungal Nail Clinic to
offer the solution you’ve been looking for.
It Begins With Trauma
The most common cause of nail fungus in healthy adults is an infection by dermatophytes, which begins with trauma to the nail allowing the dermatophyte invasion. Patients often report that their condition began as a result of getting a pedicure. By allowing a pedicurist to push back the cuticles, or cut the nail too short, you are interfering with the natural barriers that help prevent infection. Trauma to the nail can also result from something as simple as repetitive microtrauma associated with intense athletic activities like tennis and long distance running, wearing tight shoes, or not keeping your nails trimmed to an appropriate length. Other causes include severe fungal skin infections, diabetes, poor circulation, or a compromised immune system. Keeping your feet in shoes all day creates a dark, moist environment, only making the problem worse.
How We Can Help
Home remedies, like tea tree oil, Vix Vapor Rub and other over-the-counter products at your local pharmacy, are only effective in treating very mild infections. And by the time most people have noticed the brittleness, thickening and worsening discoloration, the infection has progressed well beyond the point where these are viable solutions. Effective treatment requires a more aggressive treatment plan. This is where the Bay Area Fungal Nail Clinic can help.
